What’s in Kiernan Shipka’s Closet

‘Mad Men’ star Kiernan Shipka takes our BFF Harper’s Bazaar Features/Special Projects Director Laura Brown on a tour of her closet.

      I have seen several crown braid how-to posts on pinterest, and I love the look of them and would love to do it to myself.  I’m an expert level french braider, and I am better at doing my own hair than I am at doing others.  I have tried this and failed 6 times.  But I do believe it has strengthened all the muscles in my arms holding them over my head at weird angles for long periods of time during my attempts.  Sadly, I think this is a situation where I will have to pay someone to do it for me for a fancy schmancy up-do for an event rather than a fun twist to the every-day braided work-’do.

        That’s actually not a crown braid, though. It’s just a side french (with only half the hair, not all of the hair pulled over) pulled into a bun. Getting all the parts of the hair to not pull differently when pulling it into a bun might be tricky, but the french itself would be pretty straightforward. I often do a french braid on either side of my head.

         Kiernan’s a fifth of mine….. Missy Shipka really seems like a delightful person.  Hope she can stay that way, and that we see a lot more of her in the coming years.

    She is my hero.  She’s 12 (and a half!) and she’s more comfortable in her skin than most 30-somethings.  That girl is going to have quite a career if she doesn’t Lohan.

    She’s just as adorable and down-to-earth (well as down to earth as a 12 year old with Oscar de la Renta can be) as I hoped she would be. I love her last line…yeah, but I’m 12….to the comment about Jimmy Fallon being dreamy. Kiernan/Sally rules….and I want those silver tipped toed shoes…wonder what they’d look like in a size 10.

    She looks so much like Emma Watson that it’s kind of scary. Also, her closet it bigger than my daughter’s bedroom…. Cute stuff, though.

      I was thinking the same thing! I never noticed her resemblance to Emma before, but then I don’t see a lot of her since I don’t watch Mad Men.

    Gal’s got a baby star vibe and poise and the looks to make an acting career viable in this shallow age. Will be interesting to see where she’ll take the seemingly so-far-sane path she’s been on.

    Her shoes are AWESOME. I’m coveting a 12-yr-old’s shoes. That her grandparents gave her. Best not think about that too hard.

    It’s amazing to me that she really looks like the child of Jon Hamm and January Jones. Such a down to earth kid, and she dealt well with the attempted cutesiness of Laura Brown: “Jimmy Fallon, isn’t he dreamy?” “Um, I’m 12…” Also, her clothes are to die.

      I agree, though not in an inappropriate way. The makeup seems a bit much to me tho, esp eyebrows? I dunno, visible makeup on anyone under 14 just freaks me out.

        Yeah I was noticing the make up too. I’m kind of biased though because I didn’t start wearing makeup until I was around 18 (by choice), and I still don’t wear much now. At least it’s not TOO overpowering?

           To me, they’ve only enhanced her natural features, and it’s intended to look as though she doesn’t have any make up on, which is always nice. I love that her eyebrows also look like they’ve been left alone. S

    That feeling when a 12 year old’s closet is bigger than your own and you’re 24, and you have more (obviously much less expensive) clothing than she does.

    I don’t watch the show so I only know her from TLo. She is really amazing in this video. So now I am left wondering: if she has all these fabulous clothes and this great fashion sense, why does she always appear on the red carpet in party dresses for an 8 year old? I’m glad she isn’t dressing in a way that’s too old for her, but now I’m thinking that she’s dressing too young.

    I can believe these are the clothes she wears on the set.  I don’t believe these are her real clothes.  No one has dressed like that since the pre-hippie 1960′s.

    Love the way her casual look is classic and a little edgy with those amazeballs boots. Love LOVE that she practices martial arts; hopefully she’ll be able to draw on the lessons learned there to stay centered as her acting career blossoms. Go, Kiernan!

    What a sweetheart!  She seems incredibly sane and in spite of her fashion sense (and ability to indulge in it), still seems like a young kid–as she should.  Every time she said, “Right?” I thought, “Thanks goodness, she’s REALLY still twelve on the inside, too.”
