Rose Byrne for FLARE Magazine

Rose Byrne covers the August 2012 issue of FLARE magazine photographed by Max Abadian.

On comedy vs. drama: “It’s definitely more challenging for me to do comedy. I’m not as used to doing comedy, the stakes are higher. But it’s so addictive, to make people laugh.”

On ruling the red carpet: “I think for the red carpet in general it’s important to keep it youthful. A lot of people can look very dressed up and old and severe. That’s sort of my worst fear, is erring on that side.”

On her off-duty style: “I go through phases, but I mostly dress in high street clothing, like Urban Outfitters. Every day, really. My [best recent purchase was my] Zara boots…they get so many compliments. They’re great walking shoes, perfect for the city.”

On working with Heath Ledger: “I’m so proud of that film [1999’s Two Hands]. It’s an Australian classic. Heath is so beautiful in it…they couldn’t have made it without him. We were just kids making that movie.”

Prefer this dress on her than on Jennifer Lawrence. It just works better for me.

That is not great.  She really doesn’t excite me fashion wise, but she is so good on Damages.

  • Lisa Dugan

She’s beautiful and the red dress is gorgeous but she is airbrushed to within an inch of her life on that cover.

Usually love Lanvin anything, but what the hell is going on with that shirt? Exaggerating the girth of the upper arms is frightening.

  • JasmineAM

I can’t unsee the muscle tissue on the dress. It’s creeping me out.

    • MilaXX

       I blame slim goodbody

    • Kristin McNamara

was gonna write the exact same thing. can’t unsee it.

    • greyhoundgirl

Exactly!  I was scrolling to see if anyone else already wrote it before I posted.  And not in a fun, ironic way, like the leggings with the skeleton print.

  • Sobaika

She’s afraid of looking severe on the RC?

Then she might want to rethink the Wintour Bob. I love it on her, but it’s not exactly softening.

    • MilaXX

that’s exactly why I had it. It’s so severe looking.

  • Elyse Klova

Her expression in the Lanvin pic is straight out of a Klimt painting. Gorgeous.

  • MilaXX

Glad to see she got rid of that horrible Agent 99 bob. On the other hand for someone worried about looking old that plum/eggplant outfit is dong her no favors.

    • Kristin McNamara

Right?! That dress is INCREDIBLY unflattering!!!! She’s a tiny little thing, and she looks multiple sizes larger than what I’m sure she is.

      • http://www.GiftedCollector.com Nancy Abrams

And yet,she still looks 50 pounds lighter than the model. What an unflattering outfit.

        • Aurumgirl

It’s like a purple fat suit.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

This troubles me. She doesn’t look like herself. Full-on Uncanny Valley in the cover shot. She is so beautiful, I’ve adored her since Wicker Park, and I love that she has a couple of teeth that overlap. I don’t see any of that charming imperfection here.

  • Lina_bee

Photoshop FAIL. She doesn’t look a thing like herself.

the styling on the purple one looks megachic.

  • http://twitter.com/SparklyCasanova UglyCasanova

That first dress is all kinds of beautiful!

God, what is wrong with these magazines??!?!

  • Saucysusan

That purple suit…nightmarish 80′s flashback. Why?

  • quiltrx

I wish i could wake up in the morning with her hairdo in the Lanvin dress.

  • NurseEllen

I remember when T & Lo were at NYC Fashion Week and said that it was a revelation to see all these designer clothes close up, because only then could one really appreciate the fantastic, detailed work in the embroidery, embellishments, tailoring, etc.  Here is a case in point.  The red Marchesa dress looks completely stunning close up in the magazine cover, where the intricacy of how the fabric is worked is so apparent.  Can’t see that in the full-length view.  Rose doesn’t have to worry about looking too old or severe when wearing this dress!

  • guest2visits

Yes to the red Marchesa, no to heavy purple Lanvin armor. Although I’d like to know whats going on with the back of those shoes.

Rose Byrne has the most perfect nose, cheeks, mouth combination. Her thinness makes her more model like than a lot of amazon models that are out there today. She looks better in the dresses than the runway models. The fact is that curvy women may be beautiful but modeling in not just about that, it is about making what you are wearing desirable. Very thin women make the clothes look better, their bodies are made to be the enhancement for designer masterpieces

    • greyhoundgirl

I disagree with you.  Sometimes very thin women make the clothes look like they are on a hanger.  Sometimes very thin women draw the attention to their bony sternums rather than the clothes. It depends on the model and it depends on the clothes.

Funny how she says she has a horror of looking too mature on the red carpet, and then they put her in that awful old lady Lanvin suit.

  • allisankelly

That second look is screaming Cruella DeVille, The Early Years, to me. Love it.

  • TieDye64

Pretty, but a little too severe for my taste.

  • marilyn

The cover shot is great.  The dress is very interesting, with the lace, the twists of fabric and the illusion netting that holds them together.  In theory the different elements sound horrendous together, but put them together in red lace, of all things, and it is fantastic.  Not a fan of the pleats at the skirt.  There is enough going on with the top of this dress, that it does not need the pleating, which is a distraction.  A+ for her on the cover and A- for the dress.

The second look is boring, but okay.

  • http://twitter.com/nonchalantanna Anna

She talks about wanting to look youthful in her images while these looks are very mature. Nonetheless, classy with great textures and colors.

  • littlemac8

She’s so gorgeous and the photoshop on the cover renders her unrecognizable.

  • Cat_In_A_Hat

I don’t know whether to give credit to Rose or the photoshop technician for making that outrageously unflattering Lanvin almost work.
