“Postcards From the Edge” = best movie EVER….”It TWIRLED up”…remains one of my favorite lines ever uttered by Ms. MacClaine. As for Ms. Streep…what can you say. The woman is an icon – the dress is age appropriate and beautiful…might not the the best color for her, but she never dresses to please others and if she’s happy, I’m happy.

    • http://visceralresponse.com Dina dV

Do you get endolphins from watching it?

      • crash1212

*LAUGH* Another great line – uttered by the great Annette Bening…before she was the great Annette Bening. What a good movie…I’m off to see if it’s On Demand!

        • SapphoPoet

I think it’s available on Netflix InstantView. Love the ending to that movie.

  • deathandthestrawberry

Oh Meryl. I love you, but wearing a dark bra under that dingy lace blouse is a big no.

    • http://www.GiftedCollector.com Nancy Abrams

And while you’re getting a color appropriate bra, please get one that holds the girls up where they belong.

      • TieDye64

        Thank you!

  • Kyle Crawford

I think she is wearing this better than SJP did….

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=790818401 Laurie Landry

    Eh, typical Meryl attire.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I wish Meryl would have worn a different blouse. Not the one on the model, but not something lacy, either. I love the skirt, though. Shirley looks a little mother-of-the-bride, but she’s Shirley MacLaine and she can do whatever the hell she wants.

    • 3boysful

Re Shirley–absolutely.  But, as long as we’re critiquing in these posts, I would’ve hoped that as the honoree she could’ve found something a bit less “Great Aunt Dotty, guest at wedding” and more glitzy and worthy of the great Shirley McL.

Surely in one of those past lives she had a fashion sense . . . .

  • Sara__B

Ms. Streep’s separates are beautiful and appropriate on their own, but somewhat spoiled by the choice of foundation garment. Ms. MacLaine reminds me of a feisty grandmother-of-the-bride who is likely to embarrass the wedding party. These women are both legends. They can wear whatever they want.

    • http://www.facebook.com/alexandra.pimenta Alexandra Gama Lima Pimenta

I agree. My heart spontaneously smiled when I saw the pics. Both are true idols in the best sense of the word. Only love from me this time. <3 <3

    • TieDye64

      Nail on the head, girl.

    • Tammy_4

Meryl and Shirl holding hands.  My  heart melts.  Love these two gals, who cares what they are wearing.

Bitches, it’s Meryl fucking Streep. She transcends fashion. Let’s not act like we’re fit to judge her

  • clairellis

Agreed. Legends. They could wear paper sacks and I wouldn’t say shit.

  • olsonam

I thought Valentino made those dresses for rich hipsters who want to be ironically dowdy.

    • judith traherne

I thought this collection was hideous and I think of the label as Post-Valentino because I imagine he would never show something so gauche.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=25500124 Eric Jacobs

I think this is a fantastic look for Meryl! It makes her look youthful, but not not juvenile.  If the top had been slightly darker or lighter, I would’ve liked it more…but she looks great!!

  • MilaXX

Wrong bra there Meryl. That dress may sort of work on the young and thin, but anyone over a 6 is going to look sister wife-y.

  • VicksieDo

All I know is that Shirley is going to have a conniption when she gets back and sees how people are spamming her on FB by tagging her in all their spam crap.  She’s going to freak out.  They look fine.

  • julesj

    looks like curtains.

  • nannypoo

    Frumpy, but they don’t care.

  • TSkot

Love the silhouette, hate the print on the skirt.  Seriously, I think my grandmother had sheets exactly like that.

    • formerlyAnon

Curtains. My mom had kitchen curtains in fabric like that. (and, yes. They were pink. So were the kitchen walls at that period – that subdued creamy pink that was big in the ’50s.)

  • CassieLee22

Really hate the top with that skirt

  • Lisa Dugan

Classic Meryl Streep at this point.  I like her top better than the full floral that the model wore but it’s still not quite there.  She looks very pretty though.

  • quiltrx

It’s very Meryl, isn’t it?  I wish the waistband were different, because I actually like the skirt otherwise.

But I want to give Ouiser a shout-out!  I really like the pattern of her shirt/jacket.

  • Lina_bee

A million years ago I used to LIKE Valentino. That’s probably why I hate virtually all their recent work, this included.

But it is DELIGHTFUL to see Shirley MacLaine getting props for the being the rockstar she is.

  • formerlyAnon

I LOVE how happy and confident Ms. Streep looks, and I love that she seems not to care all that much about trying to fool anyone into thinking she is 26 and skinny.

Nonetheless, Ms. MacLaine is better dressed IMO, she could give Ms. Streep a few tips about choosing red carpet wear.

But who am I fooling? I hate the print on Ms. Streep’s skirt, and I think a busy floral print paired with a lace blouse is too damn busy, except maybe for a willowy, beautiful, slip of a girl of 19 or 20 – the kind of girl who could wear anything, anything at all, and surmount it. So I am very biased.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

Good grief. That collection was not for you, Meryl. The old-oyster color of that bra is threatening to make me lose my lunch. Too pale, too fussy, too sheer. This should be on a Fanning or Olsen.

  • GorgeousThings

While Iike but don’t adore the lacy top, I love the skirt on her, and I totally agree with her decision not to have florals near her face. What looks great on a 17 yo model looks like upholstery on a woman after a certain age.

And yeah, I’m at that age where I don’t wear florals near my face.

  • Cat_In_A_Hat

No no no no no no no.

  • LinXGUA

I LOVE THEM. They can go nude if they want to … so Streep chose beige. But i don’t care, because, as you can see, MacLaine is rocking that Valentino. In fact, i think the rose on Streep’s skirt complement the red on MacLaine’s jacket (second photo). White and black, up and down prints, flowwy and sharp: opposites all around! The red is what associates them.
They seem to be having a great time. Happy ladies!

I know people are going to slam her for this, but somehow I LOVE that Meryl showed up to a red carpet wearing her glasses. The whole outfit seems so gleefully subversive. I don’t think it’s failing, I think it’s succeeding at something other than we expect. None of the piece alone are bad – together they give the red carpet the finger in a ladylike way.

  • SophieCollier

Someone misses her Jessica McClintock days.

  • schadenfreudelicious

At this point in her life and career Meryl can wear whatever the hell she wants.  The whole thing looks rather Holly Hobbyish on her, i would have loved to see the skirt paired with a different top, but carry on Ms Streep you can do as you wish….

  • jmorino08

I did not need to know that much about Meryl Streep’s bustline.

    • Lilak

I wore a very similar long skirt and blouse to a wedding in … 1979.  Would not wear it today for several reasons, one of which is that, like Meryl’s, my boobs aren’t in the same place they were 30 years ago.

      • Jan Lundgren

My mother wore this outfit to my wedding in 1975.

  • guest2visits

Wish she’d get some decent advice on clothes.  This is too much like a bed sheet wrapped round and round.
And it might have worked if the top wasn’t a frumpy, dated looking lace mess. Maybe a sleek pastel cardigan instead, or
a short pastel jacket ?  A solid white or pink tailored shirt ?  She’s looking good though; hair, makeup, and even the glasses.

  • girliecue

Very Mary Louise. The glorious Miss MacLaine always makes my heart smile!

  • http://twitter.com/aidanboleyn Aidan B

    Ma Ingalls.

  • Aarjullor

I’m sitting in bed in my pj’s, and my hair looks better then Meryl’s. Both dresses are terrible. I hated that Valentino colection, and I’m surprised when I see celebs wearing any of it. It hasn’t looked good on anyone.

  • http://onionjam.tumblr.com SkipperJane

Is this a costume for “Prairie Home Companion 2: the Un-Prairieing”?

  • http://www.facebook.com/ali.sharpe.6 Ali Sharpe

Aww. I don’t even care about the see-through shirt and the old-lady bra: the skirt is gorgeous and she’s Meryl Streep, goddammit.

  • JaneDC

Two amazing women with great careers. Their dazzle doesn’t come from fashion. They can wear what they want. Love the last shot!

  • http://twitter.com/SparklyCasanova UglyCasanova

They can wear whatever the hell they want at this point, they are that great.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Well she’s working that dress better than Sarah Jessica Parker at the Met Gala.  For ladies of their age, they’ve got it together better than most women half their age.

  • http://twitter.com/commish24 commish24

Who the HELL is dressing her these days? Jeez….

  • melanie0866

Looks like she’s decided that the shirtdress is her thing.  I’m very sorry to hear that, because I don’t like them.  This one is fine as far as they go.  Shirley MacLaine is dressed exactly like my grandmother, who is 91 and has never been known for her style.

  • RedRaven617

    Tragic, just tragic.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1241487378 Lauren Lynch Fox

No, No, No. Ladies, you have to show those young things how its done! Walk out of the dark in to the light, Please…

  • Karla Taboada

I loooooove this outfit on Meryl, she looks so pretty and young, and about the boobs, you do realize that it’s a high waist-ed skirt and that may give her a look that’s not exactly accurate, I think she looks great and has been for a while now, so much more stylish than some years ago. And either way, she is an Icon and can do as she wants!
